In 2022 I walked across the country from Kansas City to New York City. During the trip I would spend 8 hours a day walking 20ish miles along highways and frequently drivers would stop and ask if I needed a ride to the next town. Given how lonely the walking was, I didn’t ever accept a ride. Mainly because I didn’t know who’s car I was getting into and I didn’t even know if it was legal or not. I never personally thought it was safe but if you were to ask my grandfather he would argue that it was a normal activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You see, many people argue that hitchhiking is a dangerous activity as you never know who is picking you up. This is true, it is always important to exercise caution and trust your intuition when deciding whether or not to accept a ride from someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, there are steps that can be taken in order to make hitchhiking safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite these steps, it is ultimately up to the individual and their own personal level of comfort with hitchhiking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Personally I wouldn’t pick up a hitchhiker if I was with my loved ones, if I was by myself I maybe would but it would depend on the circumstances.
